One of my favourite sites on the web is TED as I'm always able to find interesting talks and videos.
One of the talks that peaked my interest was this video featuring Salman Khan, the founder of .
I had heard about flipping the classroom, but had little idea, so off to Google I went and the first article that came up was this.
I followed a number of the links and got a feel for the ideas. Then I saw my old friend Salman, again.
There are any number of articles and videos on this topic but my analysis went like this:-
I am an experienced teacher who knows my subject matter well enough to be able to choose relevant and interesting resources to cover most of the factual content. Whatever I can't find on line, I can create myself. Recalling the factual content is essentially a low order skill.
My expertise is actually used more wisely by teaching my students:-
how to analyse information,
how to choose the most relevant information,
how to express themselves clearly in a scientific context.
My students want more:-
discussions,
authentic practical work,
practice in responding to questions, and
they don't find to actual content of the course the hardest part
